I've been hearing a lot of people talk about what they are giving up for Lent. Forty days of doing without something you cherish. I understand the reason people do this, but it seems more of a punishment that would distract me from focusing on the reason we set aside Lent as a special season in the church. Lent is a time to remember what Jesus did for me -- to remember that His death on the cross is my "get out of hell free card". For those of you who have the will power to give up something you love, I admire you; but my giving up coffee for 40 days would not be good for anyone :) Perhaps a better way I can make this Lenten season special is to set aside 40 days of service. Using this time to reflect on my Baptism, and asking myself what it should look like to live as a redeemed child of God. If I truly understand what Jesus did for me, and my life is all about bringing glory to Him, then giving 40 days of service seems more appropriate than giving something up. No judgement intended -- just something to make you think hmmmmm.
